At St. Joseph’s Pre-Primary School, we’ve seen firsthand how storytime can light up a child’s imagination, strengthen their language skills, and create special moments of connection. But there’s a secret to making storytime truly magical it’s not just what you read, but how you read it. By adding a few storyteller’s touches, you can turn an ordinary book into an unforgettable adventure for your child.
1. Bring the Characters to Life with Your Voice
Every character in a story has their own personality, and your voice can help show it. Give each character a distinct tone maybe a deep, booming voice for a giant and a soft, squeaky voice for a mouse. Changing your pitch, speed, and volume helps children follow the story and makes it easier for them to remember the characters.
2. Use Expressions That Match the Mood
Your facial expressions are just as important as your voice. If the story is exciting, widen your eyes; if it’s sad, soften your face and voice. Children are keen observers they’ll pick up on your expressions and connect them to the emotions in the story. This builds empathy and emotional understanding.
3. Add Pauses for Suspense
Don’t rush! Pausing at just the right moment before the big reveal, the scary part, or the funny twist keeps children hooked. These pauses give them time to imagine what might happen next and encourage them to stay engaged until the very end.
4. Invite Your Child to Join In
Make storytime interactive. Ask questions like “What do you think will happen next?” or “How do you think the character feels?” Let them turn the pages or repeat a funny line with you. This makes the story feel like a shared experience rather than a performance.
5. Use Props and Gestures
You don’t need anything fancy a blanket can become a cape, or a spoon can be a magic wand. Simple props, along with hand gestures and body movements, help bring scenes to life and make the story more vivid in your child’s mind.
Storytime as a Bonding Moment
When you read aloud like a storyteller, you’re doing more than sharing a story you’re creating a memory. These moments help your child associate books with joy, spark their curiosity, and build a lifelong love of reading. At St. Joseph’s, we encourage parents to see storytime not as a task, but as a treasured daily ritual a few minutes each day to step into another world together.
